Start With Four Numbers
You have a machine to move and a quote to get. The first thing any carrier asks is how long, how wide, how tall, and how heavy it is. This list pulls construction equipment transport dimensions for 100 common machines from Cat, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, Case, Hitachi, Kubota, Bobcat, Doosan (now Develon), Liebherr, JCB, Hyundai, and a few others, so you can see early whether your unit fits a step deck, needs an RGN, or crosses into permit territory.
Every number below comes from the published spec listing on RitchieSpecs. Where the listing did not show a dimension, or showed a value that could not be right (a 169 ft dozer, for example), we marked it n/a instead of guessing. Specs change with year, boom and stick, blade, bucket, tracks, and options, so treat these as a planning starting point and confirm your own unit with a tape measure and the serial plate before booking.
Construction Equipment Transport Dimensions by Machine Type
How to read the table: length, width, and height are the listed shipping or overall dimensions in feet and inches, and weight is the listed operating weight in pounds. Operating weight usually includes a standard bucket or blade, fluids, and an operator, so your actual shipping weight can be a bit different. RitchieSpecs lists compact track loaders as multi terrain loaders and dozers as crawler tractors, and we kept their names. On a phone, each machine shows as its own card.

Legal Limits and When You Need a Permit
A load is usually legal without an oversize permit when it stays within 8’6″ wide, roughly 13’6″ to 14′ tall depending on the state, and 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight with legal axle weights. Go past any of those and you are looking at oversize or overweight permits.
- Width: 8’6″ (102 inches) is the federal width standard on the National Network. Over that, the load needs an oversize permit in each state on the route. Many states start requiring pilot cars somewhere around 12′ wide, and the exact trigger varies by state.
- Height: there is no single federal height limit. Most states set 13’6″, and a number of western states, California included, allow 14′. Measure the machine on the trailer, not on the ground, because deck height counts. A typical step deck lower deck sits around 3’6″ off the ground, and an RGN or double drop well sits closer to 2′.
- Weight: 80,000 lb gross is the federal interstate limit, with 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem as the usual axle limits, subject to the bridge formula. After the truck and trailer, a standard step deck typically has room for something in the mid 40,000 lb range, so heavier machines go on multi axle RGNs with overweight permits.
- Length: most states allow a 48′ to 53′ trailer. Long booms, scrapers, and some excavators hang over the deck, and overhang past state limits needs a permit and flags or lights.
A permit is never decided by the model name alone. The carrier and permit service check the actual loaded dimensions, weight, axle spacing, route, and every state you cross. For the federal rules, see the FHWA size and weight program, and for state by state triggers, see the IZ guide to oversize permits and escort requirements.

Construction Equipment Transport FAQ
What trailer do I need for a mid size excavator?
A 20 to 25 ton excavator is often over 10′ tall and close to 50,000 lb, which usually points to an RGN. Some units with the boom lowered fit a step deck, so the measured height on the trailer decides it.
Is my dozer oversize?
Often yes because of the blade. Many mid size dozer blades are wider than 8’6″. Angling the blade or removing it can bring some machines under the legal width; the dealer or the machine’s manual will tell you if that is practical.
Why does the table show n/a for some machines?
We only used numbers that the spec listing actually showed. When a dimension was missing or clearly wrong on the listing, we left it blank instead of guessing.
Do I need a permit for a skid steer or mini excavator?
Usually not. Most skid steers, compact track loaders, and mini excavators fit within legal width, height, and weight on a step deck or flatbed. The carrier still confirms the loaded numbers.
