Partial truckload

What Is Partial Truckload Shipping, and When Does It Make Sense?

Partial truckload shipping puts your freight on part of a trailer with one or two other shipments going the same direction. You pay for the deck you use, and the freight stays on the same truck from pickup to delivery.

It is the middle ground most shippers do not know about. Your machine or crate is too big or too fragile for LTL, but a whole truck feels like paying for empty space. Partial fills that gap.

We call our open deck version DeckShare. We match your freight with other loads on our network of carriers, plan the stops so nothing gets moved twice, and give you one point of contact the whole way.

What we move

What Freight Ships Best as Partial Truckload?

Anything that needs an open deck or careful handling but not the whole trailer. These are the loads we share every week.

CNC machines

Mills, lathes and machining centers, shrink wrapped and chained at the base.

Crated equipment

Wood crates and boxed equipment too heavy or tall for a van.

Skidded machinery

Shrink wrapped machines on skids that need a forklift at each end.

Steel and pipe

Bundles, beams, tube and plate that ride flat on the deck.

Generators

Gensets, compressors and power units on skids.

Vehicles

Forklifts, small trucks, vans and equipment on wheels.

Tarped freight

Loads that need tarps or a Conestoga to stay dry.

Building materials

Lumber, panels and jobsite materials going to one or two drops.

How shared loads work

How Does a Shared Truckload Get From Los Angeles to Texas?

One truck picks up at two Los Angeles area shippers, both loads ride on the same deck, and each one is dropped off at its own delivery address.

Here is a real style of DeckShare run. A step deck picks up a machine in Commerce, then a second machine in Ontario. Both are chained down by the driver, and the truck heads east on I-10 to drop one in Dallas and the other in Houston.

Nobody unloads your freight to make room for someone else. We plan the load order so the first drop is on the back, and you hear from us at pickup, in transit and at delivery.

  • Two Los Angeles area pickups, two Texas drops
  • Freight loaded once and unloaded once
  • Each shipper gets their own updates and POD

LTL vs partial vs full

Should You Ship LTL, Partial or Full Truckload?

The right mode depends on how much deck you need, how fragile the freight is and how fast it has to arrive.

What matters
LTL
Partial truckload
Best for
1 to 6 pallets that fit in a van
Machinery, crates and freight using part of an open deck
Handling
Terminal to terminal, several forklift moves
Loaded once and unloaded once
Trailer
Dry van
Flatbed, step deck, Conestoga or hotshot
Size limits
Usually under 12 ft and 10,000 lb
Up to about 36 ft of deck and 30,000 lb
Damage risk
Higher for tall or top heavy freight
Low. Chained or strapped by the driver
When to go full
Never, if it is just pallets
When it fills the deck, is oversized or is urgent

Protecting shared freight

How Do You Keep Shared Freight Safe on One Trailer?

Every piece gets its own securement, its own spot on the deck and its own protection, so another shipper's freight never touches yours.

The driver chains machines at the base or skid and straps crates with edge protection. Freight that needs to stay dry gets tarped or goes on a Conestoga. We send photos at pickup when you ask.

  • Machines shrink wrapped and chained at the base
  • Crates strapped with corner protectors
  • Tarps or a Conestoga for weather
  • Load order planned around each drop
TIP

Measure the footprint, not just the weight

Send length, width and height with the weight. Deck space is what we share, so a good footprint gets you the most accurate partial rate.

Partial Truckload Shipping FAQs

Partial truckload, or PTL, is freight that takes up part of a trailer but is too big, heavy or fragile for LTL. It shares one truck with one or two other shipments and rides on the same trailer from pickup to delivery, with no terminal or cross dock in between.

When your freight fills roughly 8 to 36 feet of deck or weighs under about 30,000 pounds. You pay for the space you use instead of the whole trailer, and the freight still moves direct.

DeckShare is our open deck partial truckload service. We match your machine, crate or equipment with other freight headed the same way on a flatbed, step deck or Conestoga, so you share the trailer and the cost.

For machinery, crates and long or heavy pieces, yes. LTL freight gets moved through terminals and handled by forklifts several times. Partial freight is loaded once and unloaded once, strapped or chained to the deck by the driver.

Usually a day or two longer than a dedicated truck because the trailer may make one or two extra stops. We give you a realistic pickup and delivery window up front and keep you posted the whole way.

Machinery, CNC machines, crated equipment, steel, pipe, lumber, generators, vehicles and anything shrink wrapped on skids that does not need the whole deck.

Yes. We can tarp on a flatbed or step deck, or put your freight on a Conestoga with a rolling tarp system so it stays dry and covered from pickup to delivery.

The pickup and delivery addresses, dimensions, weight, how it is packaged, loading and unloading equipment at each end, and your timing. Photos help us pick the right trailer.
