What Is Full Truckload Shipping?

Full truckload shipping gives your freight the whole trailer. The truck loads at your dock and drives straight to the delivery address, with no other freight on the deck and no stops in between.

It is the fastest and simplest way to move a big load. Nothing gets moved to make room for another shipper, the driver works only for your freight, and the schedule is built around your dates.

We book full truckloads on our network of carriers out of Los Angeles every day, from a single tall machine on a step deck to 45,000 pounds of steel on a flatbed, plus dry vans and reefers when the freight needs to be enclosed.

Team drivers

How Fast Can a Full Truckload Get Across the Country?

With a team, a legal size truckload can go from Los Angeles to Chicago in about two days instead of four.

Hours of service rules limit a solo driver to about 11 hours behind the wheel a day. Two drivers take turns so the truck keeps moving while one rests.

Teams work on legal size freight only. Oversized loads with permits can only travel in daylight, so they move on a solo schedule.

  • Solo: about 500 miles a day
  • Team: about 1,000 miles a day
  • Flatbed, step deck and Conestoga teams available

A team run on a Conestoga keeps freight moving around the clock.

Choosing the trailer

Which Trailer Is Right for My Full Truckload?

Height, weight and how the freight loads decide the trailer. Tall freight goes on a step deck, heavy equipment goes on an RGN, and anything that has to stay dry goes in a Conestoga or van.

A flatbed deck sits about 60 inches off the ground, so legal freight height is about 8 ft 6 in. A step deck drops to about 42 inches for about 10 ft of freight height. We check the route for low bridges before we book.

  • Flatbed for steel, lumber and crated freight
  • Step deck for tall machines and equipment
  • RGN for heavy and drive on equipment
  • Conestoga or van for covered freight
TIP

Tell us how it loads

Forklift, crane or dock? The loading method at both ends often decides the trailer as much as the freight does.

Full Truckload Shipping FAQs

Full truckload, or FTL, means one shipment gets the whole trailer. The truck loads at your dock and drives straight to the delivery address with no other stops and no terminals.

When the freight fills most of the deck, weighs more than about 30,000 pounds, is oversized, or has to arrive on a specific day. It is also the right call for high value freight you do not want sharing a trailer.

A solo driver covers roughly 500 miles a day, so Los Angeles to Phoenix is typically next day and Los Angeles to Dallas typically about three days. Team drivers can cut long haul transit nearly in half.

Flatbed, step deck, Conestoga, double drop, RGN, hotshot, dry van and reefer. We match the trailer to the freight, the loading equipment and any height limits on the route.

Yes. Team drivers keep the truck rolling nearly around the clock, which is the fastest way to get freight across the country on legal size loads.

Yes. Flatbed and step deck loads can be tarped by the driver, or we can book a Conestoga with a rolling tarp so the freight stays covered and dry.

Pickup and delivery addresses, the commodity, weight, dimensions, how it loads and unloads, and the dates. Photos help us choose the right trailer.

Yes. You hear from us at pickup, in transit and at delivery, and you get the signed POD the same day it delivers.
