Freight forwarder trucking

What Is Freight Forwarder Trucking, and Why Do Forwarders Call IZ Freight?

Freight forwarder trucking is the domestic truck move a forwarder books once cargo clears the Port of Los Angeles or the Port of Long Beach: the container pull, the transload, and the final mile to the consignee's door.

That last leg is where a lot of ocean moves go sideways. A missed port appointment, a surprise accessorial or a truck that never shows can undo weeks of good work on the water. We work with freight forwarders, NVOCCs and customs brokers every week, and our whole job is to make that trucking leg boring in the best way.

You get one coordinator from quote to POD, an all-in rate you can pass to your customer, and our network of carriers on flatbed, step deck, Conestoga, RGN, dry van and drayage chassis. From San Pedro Bay we arrange delivery anywhere in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Port to door

How Does Port-to-Door Trucking Work From San Pedro Bay?

The ship berths, the container or flat rack is released, a truck from our network of carriers picks it up, and the freight rolls straight to the door or through a transload first.

Some freight leaves the terminal on the same chassis it arrived on. Flat racks and breakbulk get lifted right onto a flatbed or step deck at the port. Containers that need to be split, palletized or shrink wrapped go to a transload warehouse near the port first, then out on FTL, partial or LTL to each consignee.

What forwarders need

What Do Freight Forwarders Need From a Trucking Provider?

A forwarder needs a trucking partner who answers, quotes accurately, has real capacity and protects the customer relationship. Here is how we cover each one.

One point of contact

You talk to the same person from the quote to the POD. No ticket queue, no call center, no telling the story three times.

Fast quotes

Send the container number or the dims and we come back fast, often within the hour during business hours, so you can quote your customer while they are still on the phone.

All-in, accurate quotes

Chassis, prepull, storage, tarps, permits and liftgate are called out up front. If an accessorial could apply, you hear about it before you book, not on the invoice.

Carriers and capacity

IZ's carrier network powered by Armstrong Transport gives us vetted open deck, van and drayage capacity out of Los Angeles, even in tight weeks.

Open deck for OOG

Flat racks, out of gauge crates, breakbulk and machinery go on flatbed, step deck, Conestoga or RGN, with permits and escorts when needed.

Drayage and transload

We coordinate the container pull, the transload near the port and the outbound truck, so the box is scheduled back to the terminal.

Tracking and POD

Proactive updates at pickup, in transit and at delivery, plus photos and a signed POD you can forward the same day.

Blind, white glove service

Your customer sees your name. We never go around the forwarder, never quote your consignee, and keep paperwork blind when you ask.

Why forwarders choose IZ

Why Do Forwarders Choose IZ Over Big National Brokerages?

Big national brokerages are built for volume. We are built for the forwarder who needs one load done right and a partner who picks up the phone.

What Happens Between Vessel Arrival and Door Delivery?

Six steps take your freight from the terminal at San Pedro Bay to the consignee's dock, and you hear from us at every one.

Send the release details

Share the container or booking number, the terminal, the commodity, weights, dims and the delivery address. Photos of flat racks or crates help us pick the right trailer.

Get an all-in quote

We price the pull, any transload, the outbound truck and the likely accessorials, then send one clear number you can take to your customer.

Book the port appointment

Once the freight is released and the hold is clear, we line up the terminal appointment, the chassis or open deck truck and the warehouse if needed.

Pickup and transload

The driver pulls the container or loads the flat rack at the terminal. Freight that needs to be split is palletized and shrink wrapped near the port.

Empty return and transit

The empty goes back inside free time when we can make it happen, and the loaded truck heads out with updates sent to you along the way.

Door delivery and POD

The consignee signs, we send the POD and delivery photos to you the same day, and your customer only ever sees your name.

Port appointments

How Do You Avoid Demurrage and Per Diem at the Los Angeles and Long Beach Ports?

Book the terminal appointment as soon as the freight is released, pull the container inside free time, and get the empty back before per diem starts.

Demurrage is charged by the terminal while the box sits on the port. Per diem, or detention, is charged by the ocean carrier while the container or chassis is out of the terminal. We watch both clocks for you.

  • We check last free day and holds before we dispatch.
  • We book port appointments early and rebook fast if a terminal shifts.
  • We transload near the port when it frees up the container faster.
  • We return empties to the right terminal and send you the interchange.

Need the container side handled end to end? See our port drayage service.

TIP

Send the last free day with the release

When we know the last free day on day one, we can plan the pull around it. That one detail saves more storage charges than anything else we do.

Open deck and OOG

Can You Haul Flat Racks, OOG and Breakbulk Straight From the Port?

Yes. Flat racks, out of gauge cargo, breakbulk and machinery load straight onto open deck trailers at the terminal or a nearby yard.

Out of gauge freight is wider, taller or longer than a standard container can carry. We match it with a flatbed, step deck, Conestoga or RGN from our network of carriers, handle the permits and escorts on oversized loads, and confirm the securement plan before the truck rolls.

  • Flat rack and open top containers
  • Shrink wrapped crates and skidded machinery
  • Excavators, tractors and construction equipment
  • Steel, coils, beams and project cargo

For bigger moves see heavy haul and oversized and our guide on moving machinery from a port container to a flatbed.

Which Trailers Fit Out of Gauge Port Freight?

Flatbeds take flat racks and breakbulk, step decks and double drops keep tall OOG cargo under legal height, RGNs carry excavators and heavy machinery, and Conestogas keep crated freight dry. See every option on our trailer types page.

Everything you clear

What Freight Can We Arrange for Forwarders Out of the Port of Los Angeles?

If you clear it at the Port of Los Angeles or Long Beach, we can coordinate the trucking. IZ Freight books every move through our carrier network, powered by Armstrong Transport, and you get one coordinator from release to POD.

Your customer stays yours

How Does IZ Protect the Forwarder's Customer Relationship?

We coordinate your trucking under your name. We never go around the forwarder, and we never market to your shipper or consignee.

Blind shipments are normal for us. We can keep your customer's name off the carrier paperwork, use your reference numbers, and send every update and POD to you so you stay the hero of the story.

Blind paperwork

Rate confirmations and BOLs can show only what you want the driver and consignee to see.

White glove mindset

Delivery appointments, liftgate, inside delivery and photos handled the way your customer expects.
