Carrier liability is not full-value coverage

LTL carriers can limit their liability for loss or damage under their own tariffs. The limit varies by carrier and can depend on your freight class, so you cannot assume the full value of your freight is covered. Carrier liability is also different from insurance. If you do not give written value instructions, your freight generally moves at the carrier's standard limit.

Optional added cargo coverage

What it is

Optional added coverage up to $2.5M per shipment is available on request (up to $500K for Mexico cross-border), subject to approval, terms and exclusions. Armstrong offers gap coverage, for when your freight is worth more than the carrier's cargo coverage, and all-risk coverage, which looks at the full value of the load with limited exclusions.

How to request it

Send a written request with the declared value of your freight at least 72 hours before scheduled pickup. The cost is quoted separately and paid by the shipper. Coverage applies only once it is confirmed in writing.

Protect your shipment and your claim

Before pickup

  • Declare the value of your freight in writing.
  • Ask for added coverage at least 72 hours before pickup.
  • Pack and palletize well. Damage caused by inadequate packaging may not be covered.
  • Take photos of the freight before it ships.

At delivery and after

  • Inspect the freight before signing.
  • Note any damage or shortage on the delivery receipt.
  • Take photos and keep the packaging.
  • Send a written claim to IZ Freight with the bill of lading, signed delivery receipt, invoice and photos, within the deadline in Armstrong's Brokerage Terms and Conditions.

Claims are reviewed by the carrier or insurer under their own terms. Filing a claim does not guarantee payment.
