Oversize Permits and Escort Requirements by State

Legal limits, permit triggers, pilot car rules and official state permit links in one map, built for heavy haul and open deck freight moving out of Los Angeles.

Oversize basics

When Does a Load Need an Oversize Permit?

Five quick checks before you book an open deck or heavy haul truck. Each state then adds its own permit, escort and travel rules.

Planning guide only. General examples for planning, not legal advice, a permit or a route approval. Rules change, and each state’s permit office and your issued permit control. IZ Freight makes no warranty and is not liable for decisions based on this page. Verify with the state DOT before you move. Last checked Oct 16, 2026.

8 ft 6 inLegal width

Wider than 8 ft 6 in?

Federal rules set 102 inches as the standard width on the National Network. Anything wider is a wide load and needs a permit in every state it crosses.

80,000 lbInterstate gross

Heavier than 80,000 lb?

The federal Interstate limit is 80,000 lb gross, 20,000 lb per single axle and 34,000 lb per tandem, plus the bridge formula. Non-divisible loads over that need an overweight permit.

13 ft 6 in to 14 ftTypical legal height

Taller than the state allows?

Legal height is set by each state, often 13 ft 6 in in the East and 14 ft in much of the West. Over that needs a permit, and very tall loads can need a height pole and route survey.

Pilot carsEscort thresholds

When do you need escorts?

Each state sets its own width, height and length triggers for pilot cars, and the permit tells you how many and where they run. Pick any state on the map below to open its official permit office, phone and escort rules.

DaylightTravel windows

When can the load move?

Most states limit oversize moves to daylight, keep wide loads off the road on major holidays, and add city curfews. The permit is the final word.

Permit and escort tiers explained

How Big Can Your Load Get Before It Needs Permits and Escorts?

    California oversize permits: key facts

    • Legal without a permit: 8' 6" (102 in) wide, 14' 0" high, 20,000 lb single axle, 34,000 lb tandem, bridge table up to 80,000 lb12162527.
    • Legal length: 40' 0" single vehicle; 65' 0" California Legal combination; STAA 53' 0" trailer with 40' 0" kingpin to rear axle181920.
    • Caltrans permits cover state highways only. Cities and counties issue their own permits for local streets31254.
    • Pilot rules by route color begin over 10' 0" wide, and any Caltrans-permitted load over 12' 0" wide needs pilot cars5355254.
    • Over 15' 0" wide (16' 0" on yellow routes) means a CHP escort and a variance5987.
    • A single trip permit is valid for seven consecutive days and is issued no more than three working days before the first travel day88.
    • Apply in CTPS and build the route in CalRoute242243.
    • Loads over 10' 0" wide face weekday metro curfews in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and San Francisco5377.

Legal limits and the six things to check before you book.

Caltrans issues permits for state highways under Vehicle Code 35780. Cities and counties issue their own permits for local streets31. Caltrans follows the Transportation Permits Manual, which state regulation adopts43. Every state highway is coded twice: for size on the truck and pilot car maps, and for weight through bridge ratings by axle class77.

    How IZ handles it

IZ Freight plans the move from Los Angeles and books it through our network of carriers, powered by Armstrong Transport. The carrier on the load files the Caltrans and local permits, books pilot cars or CHP escorts when the permit calls for them, and runs the permitted route. Our job is to get your dimensions, weights, dates and pickup details right up front, so the permit matches the load at the scale.

Will my trailer make it? North Coast and Tahoe

One card per area. Each gives the roads in and a short answer for a 53' trailer and for a 48' trailer or shorter.

What a kingpin advisory means. A yellow advisory (30 to 38 ft) is a warning, not a ban65. On a permit, KPRA over 38' 0" needs a pilot5477. A 53' trailer can have KPRA up to 40' 0"20, so on a 30' advisory road, measure yours first, and if it is over 30' 0", pick a trailer that measures 30' 0" or less. Where it is a ban: SR 108 at Sonora Pass prohibits KPRA over 38' 0"58, and on a permit, the SR 1 red segments in Marin and Sonoma apply, including a CHP escort for any 2-vehicle combination between Northern Ave and Stinson Beach57.

    Eureka and Arcata

From the south on US 101 (Richardson Grove) or from Redding on SR 299

SR 299 from Redding to US 101 is an STAA route222. Coming up US 101 from the south, Richardson Grove carries a 32' kingpin advisory for 2.9 miles, and from the Humboldt County line south to about Leggett the road is California Legal, which means 65' 0" overall5719.

Crescent City and the Oregon line

US 101 north from Eureka, or US 199 from Oregon

US 101 from Eureka to Crescent City and the Oregon line is an STAA Terminal Access route57. US 199 carries a 30' kingpin advisory57. On a permit, US 199 has red segments from US 101 to SR 197 and from the Middle Fork Smith River to the Oregon line57.

    SR 36 and SR 96

SR 36 carries a 30' kingpin advisory from US 101 near Alton to near Dinsmore57. SR 96 carries a 36' advisory in Humboldt and 30' at Happy Camp, and eastbound STAA trucks may not turn right onto southbound SR 26357. On a permit, both roads have red segments57.

    Lake Tahoe

    SR 89, SR 28, SR 267 and US 50

SR 89 from Truckee to Tahoe City and SR 28 along the north shore are STAA routes223. SR 267 and US 50 from Pollock Pines to Meyers are California Legal only, which means 65' 0" overall22319. • On a permit, an advisory route is a dashed route, and KPRA over 38' 0" needs a pilot5477.
    • Enforceable bans. SR 108 at Sonora Pass bans KPRA over 38' 0"58.
    • SR 152 restricts combinations over 45' 0" on the posted segment58.
    • SR 175 restricts vehicles over 39' 0"58.
    • North Coast. US 101 at Richardson Grove carries a 32' advisory with a California Legal segment; US 199 and most coastal state routes (SR 1, 20, 36, 96, 128, 162, 169, 253, 254) carry 30' advisories. SR 299 is STAA from US 101 to Redding221222.
    • Tahoe and Sierra. SR 89 on the west shore carries a 30' advisory. SR 89 from Tahoe City to Truckee and SR 28 are STAA; SR 267 and US 50 from Pollock Pines to Meyers are California Legal only223.

    Legal weight
20,000 lb single axle, 34,000 lb tandem, bridge table up to 80,000 lb2527
    • Single axle: 20,000 lb. Any wheel: 10,500 lb25.
    • Tires cap each wheel too: the lesser of the sidewall rating or 620 lb per inch of tire width. The steer axle is capped by its sidewall rating25.
    • Axle groups follow the VC 35551 table by axle count and spread, up to 80,000 lb27.
    • Two tandems in a row can carry 34,000 lb each when the first and last axles are 36' or more apart26.
    • Spreads round to the nearest foot; exactly 6 inches rounds up26.

    • Purple: 1.5 x 700 x (L + 40). Tandem maximum 60,000 lb with 8-tire axles, 56,000 lb with 4-tire axles8375.
    • Green: 1.3 x 700 x (L + 40). Tandem maximum 52,000 lb with 8-tire axles, 48,000 lb with 4-tire axles8175.
    • Orange: 700 x (L + 40), minimum 32,000 lb. Tandem maximum 42,800 lb on the Orange chart. Chapter 3 of the Caltrans Transportation Permits Manual lists 42,000 lb with 8-tire axles and 40,000 lb with 4-tire axles8275.
    • L is the spread from first to last axle in the group, in feet818283.
    • Axles with 8 tires add 15% on 8' wide axles and 25% on 10' wide axles83.
    • Axles closer than 3' 6" count as one axle on the charts83.
    • A single axle on 4 tires charts at 28,000 lb Purple, 24,000 lb Green and 20,000 lb Orange. Steer axles stay limited by their tires2583.
    • A tridem is three axles spread 8' 0" to 10' 4"79. Fixed axles on one frame spread more than 10' 4" get no extralegal weight unless they steer75.
    • Groups closer than 18' 1" are close coupled; Caltrans figures them with averaged bonus factors7584.
    • Air or hydraulic booster axles and single-axle "Joe Dog" jeeps are not permitted in California79.
    • Each loading group counts as two axles for routing, so a tractor with a tridem trailer still routes as a 5-axle class77.
    • Bridge analysis covers 5 to 13 axles, up to 135' long77.
    • No extra weight is allowed for a load that can be reduced or repositioned to legal53.
    • Qualify the equipment. Axles must be at least 96 in wide for extra weight72.
    • A lift axle counts toward extra weight only if its axle group shares one suspension, each axle carries within 10% of an equal share, and the lift controls are outside the cab75.
    • Mixed suspensions in one axle group are not allowed75.
    • Structure review for loads over the Purple chart or a bridge rating. It can take up to two weeks and is valid for 60 days76.

    • The basic heavy-haul setup. Routed as a 5-axle class77.
    • The two groups must be at least 18' 1" apart, or the close-coupling math applies75.

How these are figured: steer 20,000 lb, tandems on 4' 6" centers, tridems on 54" or 60" centers, and every group at least 18' 1" from the next257583. Drawings share one scale. Caltrans sets the actual weights on the permit, and trailer, tire and bridge ratings can cut them.

Route limits: red, dashed and coast

    • Bridges are rated by chart. Tandem maximum: 60,000 lb Purple, 52,000 lb Green and 42,800 lb Orange; longer axle groups chart higher. X means no permits77.
    • Each bridge has a five-letter code, one letter for each routed class of 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 axles (for example PPPGG)77.
    • On the annual maps, a red symbol marks a state bridge closed to Green or Purple loads54.

Most moves cross several colors. Pilot and travel rules follow each segment's color. For weight, one Green or Orange bridge sets the chart for the whole move, using the letter for your class77. Plan for the hardest segment, not the average.

    How to read the colors

    YellowGreenBlueBrownRedDashedWhat each color allows
    • Permit loads are routed on the pilot car maps. Yellow: multilane highways. Green: non-standard freeways and two-lane roads with 12' lanes and shoulders. Blue: two-lane roads with lanes of 11' or more. Brown: narrower two-lane roads. Red: roads with operational restrictions5577.
    • A solid line follows the color rules. A dashed line of any color marks a kingpin advisory; KPRA over 38' 0" needs a pilot5577.
    • Red segments follow their own row in the Red Route Summary Table5457.
    • Search a highway such as I-5, US 101 or SR 1, then tap a road to see whether STAA 53' trucks are allowed, the kingpin limit, the pilot car route color and any red route rules.
    • Turn on the single trip or annual pilot car maps; annual maps can be switched between California Legal and STAA trucks and Legal, Green or Purple weight.
    • The map was digitized from 96 Caltrans truck route and pilot car maps, listed under Caltrans route maps in the Sources index. Pilot car colors follow the Caltrans legends5455. Basemap data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

    Truck routes for legal-size trucks

    • STAA routes (green National Network and blue terminal access) take STAA trucks: a 48' 0" trailer, or a 53' 0" trailer with KPRA of 40' 0", or 38' 0" on a single-axle trailer20.
    • California Legal routes (black) allow 65' 0" overall1965.
    • Yellow advisory routes post KPRA advisories from 30 to 38 feet65.
    • Red marks enforceable special restrictions, listed below58.

    Routes, coast and mountains

SR 1 and the North Coast, Big Sur, Tahoe and the Sierra passes, red routes and the ports.

Check Caltrans QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) or 1-800-427-7623 the day you travel. Road conditions can change quickly252.

SR 1, the North Coast and Big Sur

    • Eureka and Arcata. SR 299 is STAA from US 101 to Redding5057.
    • US 101 from the south is California Legal (65' 0", KPRA 40' 0") through Richardson Grove5057.
    • On the pilot car maps, US 101 runs brown from Crescent City to Big Lagoon and dashed brown through Richardson Grove57.
    • Coast routes. SR 1, 20, 128, 253 and 162 carry 30' KPRA advisories with dashed or red pilot car segments; SR 1 in Marin and Sonoma has red segments, including one that needs CHP for any two-vehicle combination22122457.
    • North Coast. US 101 and SR 299 have weigh stations at Little River, Ridgewood, Buckhorn and Whiskeytown247.
    • Big Sur (SR 1). Caltrans reported Highway 1 open, with all emergency projects done, as of January 14, 2026248249. Storms can still close it249.

    Tahoe and the Sierra passes

    • Sierra passes. Caltrans closes Ebbetts (SR 4), Sonora (SR 108) and Monitor (SR 89) every winter. Snow removal usually starts the first Monday of April, aiming to reopen before Memorial Day251.
    • After a storm closure, Caltrans reopened Ebbetts from Lake Alpine to Raymond Meadows on October 13, 2026252.
    • Tahoe. Chain controls stop permit loads72.
    • Holidays, Friday afternoons, Sundays and roads to recreation areas may add limits73.
    • Some cities and counties require their own night-move permit73.
    • Loads from Nevada pass a CDFA station at Truckee, Meyers, Long Valley or Topaz256.
    • Tahoe. SR 89 from Truckee to Tahoe City and SR 28 are STAA. SR 267 and US 50 from Pollock Pines to Meyers are California Legal only, and US 50 runs red on the pilot car map from Ice House Road to SR 8922357.

    Chains, snow and wind

    • Chains stop permit loads. No permit travel when chains are mandatory53.
    • When controls are posted, every heavy vehicle over 6,500 lb must chain up. There is no snow-tire exemption, and cable chains may not be allowed for big rigs48.
    • Where chains hit most. I-5 north of Redding, I-80 over Donner Pass and US 50 at Echo Summit; sometimes SR 58 Tehachapi, I-15 Cajon Pass and I-5 Tejon Pass (the Grapevine)48. Check Caltrans QuickMap before dispatch.
    • Wind. Manufactured housing may not move when wind makes the towed unit whip or swerve, and a wind-related crash is prima facie evidence of a violation53.

    Port of West Sacramento

30' channel. The North Terminal at 2895 Industrial Blvd has had a private operator since July 1, 2013, mainly for bulk cargo such as rice and cement108.

    Port of Richmond

Five city-owned and ten private terminals with BNSF and UP rail. Terminal 3 has two 37 short ton container cranes103.

    Humboldt Bay

Terminals include Fairhaven, Redwood Marine Terminal Berths 1 and 2, Schneider Dock and Sierra Pacific9495. The offshore wind heavy-lift terminal is a proposed project93. Road access from the south is US 101, California Legal (65' 0", KPRA 40' 0")50.

Drayage registration and clean truck rules

    • At Los Angeles, drayage trucks must be in the Port Drayage Truck Registry (PDTR) and the State registry before entry100.
    • Since October 1, 2018, only 2014 or newer trucks can be newly entered100.
    • The Clean Truck Fund Rate is collected through PortCheck102.
    • CARB repealed the Advanced Clean Fleets drayage and high-priority fleet rules (Board Resolution 25-9)132. The repeal was approved and filed on September 10, 2026129.
    • Drayage trucks still need state registration and Truck and Bus and Clean Truck Check compliance130131133.

    Getting the permit

CTPS steps, timing, superloads, pilot cars and CHP escorts, local permits and insurance.

Caltrans permits cover state highways only, and the routing marks with an asterisk where a city or county permit may be needed254. Any oversize load that crosses a state highway needs a state permit72. Caltrans permits only loads that cannot reasonably be divided without ruining their use or value72.

    Permit types and lead times

    • Single trip. Valid for seven consecutive days88.
    • Issued no more than three working days before the first travel day88.
    • Return trips can be added, up to 14 days in total45.
    • Repetitive and annual. For repeat moves, under the same statute31.
    • Annual permits are not valid on solid or dashed red pilot car routes; those segments need a single trip permit53.
    • Annual permits allow one pilot car at most and must follow the weekly short-term restrictions5354.
    • Variance. Needed over 17' 0" high, over 16' 0" wide on yellow routes or 15' 0" on other routes, over 135' 0" long, or for a structure review76241.
    • When a CHP escort is needed, CHP and the permittee must agree a move date within 7 calendar days of preliminary route approval. If not, the permit goes into a six-month "pending CHP release" queue89.
    • Queued permits are re-issued at least 14 calendar days before the move date89.
    • CHP is also required whenever the load uses opposing lanes or must slow to cross a structure87.
    • Emergency moves. Allowed under VC 35002(c), with the written permit obtained afterward78.

    Rules every permit carries

    • The permit, paper or electronic, rides in the truck and is shown on demand33.
    • Breaking any permit condition is unlawful35.
    • Inside a city, the driver may leave the route on nonresidential streets only to avoid breaking local traffic rules, then must return to it35.

    Single trip and annual permits

    1. Register in CTPS. All applications go through the California Transportation Permit System (formerly STARS2)72242.
    2. The route is built in CalRoute, which checks height and weight conflicts before you submit72242.
    3. Send exact data. Company details, load description and dimensions, hauling vehicle, kingpin to rear axle, overall length, loaded height, width, front and rear overhang, axle spacings, axle widths and tires72.
    4. Inspection report when needed. Required for four-axle power units, steer axles over 20,000 lb, cranes and other fixed loads, combinations of 9 or more axles and mechanical distribution units. Allow about two weeks75.
    5. Out-of-state companies need them too51.
    6. Pay on time. After approval, an unpaid single trip application is denied after 6 business hours, or 16 for annual242.
    7. Incomplete applications are denied. Applications are handled in the order received72.
    8. Carry the permit. Single trip and variance permits may be printed or electronic. Annual and repetitive permits must be the original hard copy72.
    9. No signal or a dead phone still counts as no permit254.
    10. Changes need a rider. Any change needs a permit rider or a new permit, and permits cannot be transferred72.
    11. Recheck bid routes. Caltrans will check a route for a future move, but the answer is not binding and must be rechecked before the move72.

    Variance (superload) steps

    1. Justify the move. Show the load is still over the limits at its smallest size and weight, and that no other mode is reasonably available. Cost alone is not a reason76.
    2. Equipment review first if the hauling equipment is non-standard76.
    3. Apply at least 30 days before the move. There are no verbal approvals, and incomplete applications are denied76.
    4. Route survey for loads over 17' 0" high, certified in writing by the transporter76.
    5. Structure review for loads over the Purple chart or a bridge rating. It can take up to two weeks and is valid for 60 days76.
    6. District review, then issue. The District Traffic Manager reviews the route and can recommend another route or time76.
    7. CHP escort if required. Do not book CHP until Caltrans has approved the route76.

    Common reasons for denial

    • Less than 3 in of clearance under any structure72.
    • A combination over 135' 0" (that goes to a variance)72.
    • More than 7 loading groups72.
    • Front overhang over 30' 0"72.

    Pilot cars and CHP escorts

    • Placement. One pilot leads on 2- or 3-lane highways and follows on highways of 4 or more lanes, divided highways and freeways77254.
    • With two pilots, one leads and one follows. A pilot for rear overhang always follows77254.
    • Duties. Pilots keep radio contact with the load and cross every open CHP scale with it77.
    • Pilots may not stop or hold opposing traffic, tow, or escort more than one load unless the permit allows it77.
    • Out of service. Not meeting the pilot car rules puts the load out of service until fixed77.

    CHP escorts

Show full table: CHP escort guideline
CHP escort guideline (CHP manual HPM 82.6, 2021). Where it differs, the Caltrans CHP escort table in TPPM 2021-01 and the escort trigger table above govern.

    C, D, E: Blue, Brown, RedWidth over 15' 0", or length over 135' 0"254
Any routeOver 17' 0" high needs route review; any obstacle within 3 inches of load height may require CHP254
    • Process. Caltrans notifies the CHP Division variance coordinator, who reviews the route survey and permits. The carrier signs a CHP letter of agreement254.
    • Lead time. CHP recommends about 10 business days for typical escorts and about four months for larger escort contracts. Book only after Caltrans approves the route76254.
    • Day of move. A current CVSA Level I decal is required, or CHP does a Level I inspection254.
    • The carrier supplies radios. Missing or mismatched permits from any agency delay or cancel the escort254.

    Local street permits

Cities and counties issue permits for their own streets, so a load going to a jobsite or yard usually needs both31.

    Insurance and liability

    • No bond and no proof of insurance are normally required for a Caltrans permit72.
    • The transporter must meet the financial responsibility law and is liable for damage to the highway, people or property72.
    • Exception. Caltrans or a local agency may require extra insurance or other security for unusually large or heavy loads that put public facilities at substantial risk32.
    • Route responsibility. An employee or contractor who leaves a written route can be personally guilty of a misdemeanor35.

    Checklist and common traps

    Checklist

    • Give exact dimensions and weights, to the inch and pound. If field checks differ, the permit is void53.
    • Ask early: a single trip permit is issued no more than 3 working days ahead and is valid 7 days88.
    • Variances with CHP are re-issued 14 calendar days or more before the move89.
    • Los Angeles County structure review takes 10 business days120. Los Angeles City loads over 18' high need 4 days119.
    • Do not plan pilot-car moves for holiday afternoons60; Thanksgiving starts Wed 4 PM77.

    Traps

    • CHP recommends about 10 business days' notice for an escort, and about four months for larger escort contracts. Separately, on a CHP escorted variance, you and CHP must agree a move date within 7 calendar days of preliminary route approval, or the permit waits in a six-month queue89254.
    • Report damage to state property within 72 hours53.
    • Stop at all scales53.
    • No convoys unless the permit says so53.

    What officers check

    1. The permit. Immediately available, unaltered, with every attachment and rider254.
    2. Dimensions. Any amount over the permitted width, length or height is a violation. Length is measured on both sides and averaged254.
    3. Weight. Checked per axle and axle group; gross is not considered on an extra-weight permit254.
    4. Axle spacing. "MIN" means more is fine, "MAX" means less is fine, and an unlabeled spacing must be exact254.
    5. Route and conditions. Off route is a statutory violation. Time of day, weather, pilot cars, signs and flags are all checked254.
    6. Divisibility. If moving or removing part of the load would make it legal, the permit is invalid254.
    • An officer can order the load adjusted or removed at a safe spot, or stop the move until a permit is obtained235.
    • Every commercial vehicle must stop at an open scale when signs say so, cranes and fixed-load rigs included246254.
    • Pilot cars cross the scale with the load77.

    Caltrans compliance points

    • Points add up over a rolling 12 months and can suspend permit privileges239.
    • Major violations, 6 points: no permit, off route, an altered permit, a curfew or night violation, missing pilots, or a load not as described239.
    • Minor violations, 3 points: a reducible load, or missing signs or flags239.
    • Width or length over the permit: 1 point per foot. Weight up to 6,000 lb over: 1 point per 1,000 lb239.
    • Privileges are suspended immediately for a bridge hit, or, when not authorized on the permit, height over 17' 0", width over 16' 0" on yellow routes or 15' 0" on other routes, length over 135' 0", or weight more than 10,000 lb over the permitted weight239.

Hazmat on a permit loadHazmat does not change permit issuance. CHP handles hazmat licensing and routing: (916) 843-3400.74
Unladen extralegal trailersPermitted only when going to or from a qualifying load72
    • Oversize and overweight sea containers are treated as reducible loads. They do not get single trip permits unless justified to protect critical surfaces; annual container permits are available74254.
    • A pickup can haul an oversize load on a single trip permit, but never extra weight51.

    Farm equipment and seasonal rules

    • Farm equipment on its own wheels. Equipment used only in agriculture is exempt from width, height and length limits on incidental highway moves245.
    • Hauled as a load. Over 102 inches wide on Interstates or over 120 inches on other highways, or over 14' 0" high, it may only move within 25 miles of origin, by a farmer or farm employee carrying a signed note with origin and destination245.
    • Farm trailers. Grain combine 144 inches, other equipment 120 inches, hay-loader or swather trailer 174 inches (maximums)245.
    • For-hire carriers. A carrier hauling farm equipment as freight does not get these exemptions and needs normal permits74245.
    • Seasonal limits. Caltrans may add seasonal or time limits to any permit32.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need a California permit for a load that just crosses a State highway?

Yes. Any crossing of a State highway needs a State permit, and a city or county permit is likely at the ends72.

Does a Caltrans permit cover city streets?

No. It covers only State highways. An asterisk in the routing marks where a local permit may be needed254.

How far ahead can I get a single trip permit?

Up to 3 working days ahead88. A variance needs at least 30 days76.

    Can I email my application?

No. Apply in CTPS and build the route in CalRoute242243.

What happens if I don't pay right away?

Single trip applications are denied after 6 business hours unpaid; annual applications after 16242.

Can the driver show the permit on a phone?

Yes for single trip and variance permits. Annual and repetitive permits must be the original hard copy. No signal means non-compliant72254.

How do I change a permit after it's issued?

    Get a rider or a new permit72.

Can I move a sea container on an oversize permit?

Generally no. Containers are treated as reducible, so single trip permits are allowed only when justified to protect critical surfaces. Annual container permits are available, and there is a separate overweight container permit for the port corridor74254.

When does my load become a superload (variance)?

Over 17' 0" high, over 16' 0" wide on yellow routes or over 15' 0" on others, over 135' 0" long, or when a structure review is needed76.

How wide can I go before I need pilot cars?

Pilots are required over 12' 0" wide. They may also be required on narrower loads depending on the route254.

One pilot car: front or back?

Front on 2–3 lane roads; back on 4+ lane roads, divided highways and freeways. When the pilot is required for rear overhang over 25' 0", it follows on every road77.

What equipment does a California pilot car need?

At least 60 in wide; company name on both sides; amber warning lamps; a yellow OVERSIZE sign of at least 440 sq in mounted with its bottom 48 in or more above the road; red flags; a STOP/SLOW paddle; a vest; a hand flag; a two-way radio8254.

When will CHP escort my load?

When it meets the CHP escort table: over 16' 0" wide on yellow routes (CHP's own table uses 17' 0" where there are 3 or more lanes) and over 15' 0" on green, blue and brown routes; over 185' 0" long on yellow and green routes or over 135' 0" on blue and brown routes (green, blue and brown routes have no length trigger on controlled-access roadways); 17' 0" or more high on blue and brown routes; or when the load must slow to cross structures. Red routes have their own restrictions, and any load over 17' 0" high also needs a route survey87254.

How much notice does CHP need?

About 10 business days for typical escorts and about four months for larger escort contracts. Book only after Caltrans has approved the route76254.

What does CHP inspect before an escorted move?

A current CVSA Level I decal (or a Level I inspection), all permits from every jurisdiction, and radios for all escort vehicles254.

Do I need my truck inspected by Caltrans?

Yes for 4-axle tractors, steer axles over 20,000 lb, cranes and fixed loads, 9+ axle combinations and MDUs, including for out-of-state carriers. Allow about 2 weeks5175.

How close can my load get to power lines?

At least 6' 0" from 600 V–50 kV lines, with more for higher voltage (8 CCR 2946). Call the utility to verify voltage237259.

Who lifts the wires for a tall load?

The line owner, by arrangement. Variance route surveys must list wires and their owners, and the transporter certifies the arrangements76.

How high are power lines over streets?

The GO 95 minimum is 18' 0" for communication lines over urban streets, and 20' 0" to 30' 0" for supply lines depending on voltage257.

My lowboy might hang up on a rail crossing. What's the rule?

Don't enter any rail crossing without enough undercarriage clearance or room on the far side (VC 22526)234.

Must my permit load stop at the scales?

Yes, when they are open. Cranes and fixed-load rigs too, and pilot cars cross with the load77246254.

    What will the officer measure?

Width, height and length against the permit (any excess is a violation), axle weights after tolerance, and exact axle spacings. Length is averaged from both sides254.

What happens if I'm caught off-route?

It is a statutory violation and the load may be held until a rider is issued. It is also 6 compliance points239254.

Do I need insurance or a bond for a Caltrans permit?

No bond and no proof of insurance normally; standard financial responsibility applies. Extra security can be required for unusually large or heavy loads3272.

Who pays if my load damages a bridge or sign?

    The transporter is liable72.

    Can I move at night?

It depends on the route color and width (see the route color table). Some cities require their own night-move permit73.

Can I move when it's raining or snowing?

Not on hazardous surfaces, when chains are required, or with visibility under 1,000'72.

Where are the agricultural inspection stations on the way in?

There are 16 CDFA stations on the main highways from Oregon, Nevada and Arizona (see Entering California)255.

Can a farmer move a wide combine without a permit?

On its own wheels, incidentally, yes. Hauled as a load over 102 in (Interstate) or 120 in (other highways), only within 25 miles, by a farmer or farm employee carrying a signed note245.

Is Highway 1 through Big Sur open for deliveries?

Caltrans reported all of Highway 1 open as of January 14, 2026, and warns of occasional weather closures. Check QuickMap the day you travel248249.

    FAQ

    Oversize Permit Questions

Do I need an oversize permit for a load wider than 8 ft 6 in?

Yes. The standard legal width is 8 ft 6 in (102 inches) on the National Network. A wider load needs a permit from every state on the route, and some also need pilot cars.

What is the legal weight limit without a permit?

On the Interstate it is 80,000 lb gross, 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem, subject to the federal bridge formula. Non-divisible loads over that need an overweight permit.

When do I need a pilot car or escort?

Each state sets its own width, height and length triggers. The permit lists how many escorts you need and where they run, so check every state on the route.

Can oversize loads move at night or on holidays?

Most states limit oversize travel to daylight and stop wide loads on major holidays. Some allow night moves for certain sizes when the permit says so.

Who gets the permits for my load?

When you book with IZ Freight, our network of carriers handles permits, escorts and routing for each state on the lane, with IZ coordinating the move from Los Angeles.

Is this page a legal source for permit rules?

No. It is a planning guide. Rules change, so always confirm with the state permit office before a move.
